Whatever heat source your home is using has a certain btu rating (british thermal unit or the amount of heat required to heat one pound of water by one degree fahrenheit). This btu rating is useless to any homeowner unless it is put into a dollars and cents sort of way. A way of doing this would be find out each heat sources btu per unit of consumption, figure out the price per unit and find the btu's per dollar ratio. Take for instance some common btu ratings for common sources of heat:
